Police target illegal parking - North Walsham

Forty drivers have been given words of advice as part of a clampdown on rogue parking outside a North Walsham school.

Illegal and inconsiderate parking outside North Walsham Junior and Infant School was made a priority for the Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) in March.

As a result increased high-visibility patrols have been carried out with dozens of drivers being given words of advice.

The figures were revealed during the North Walsham SNT priority setting meeting held on Wednesday, April 28.

Panel members were updated on the teams' progress with priorities which were:

  • Inconsiderate and illegal parking outside North Walsham Infant and Junior School on Brick Kiln Road and Park Avenue.
  • Anti-social behaviour by youths in a supermarket car park on Bacton Road, North Walsham.
  • May Bank, North Walsham - reports of anti-social behaviour by youths kicking doors and causing damage.

Panel members heard that as well as increased patrols, letters had been sent to parents by the school in order to discourage illegal parking.

Further patrols have been carried out since the end of the half-term break and it appears the parking problem has been reduced.

In relation to anti-social behaviour on Bacton Road, officers have made contact with the supermarket and requesting a CCTV camera to cover the footpath leading from the store to Bacton Road. Action has been taken to identify offenders and enquiries continue.

Crime has been significantly reduced in the Maybank area since anti-social behaviour was made a priority in March.

Increased high-visibility patrols have been carried out in the area and since March and there were 12 recorded crimes five of which were criminal damage. Pathway streetlights and fencing has been repaired with the area receiving a general tidy-up.

A Home Watch scheme has been set up in the Maybank/Mayfield area and members are being recruited.

Also, a request for a gating order for the Mundesley Road and Maybank pathway has now been made – with the aim of stopping footfall between specified times.

The panel agreed three new priorities which are:

  • To target anti-social behaviour in Acorn Road, North Walsham, including underage drinking and verbal abuse to local residents.
  • Underage drinking in and around North Walsham
  • Illegal parking in North Walsham town centre, Mundesley Infant and Junior School, village centre and near the Spar shop.

The next priority meeting will be held on June 23.
